Year two and onwards

Renewing private health insurance on Spain's DNV

There are two renewals in your life now and they are not the same renewal. One belongs to your insurer and arrives on the policy's anniversary. The other belongs to the authorities and arrives when your residence permission runs out. People diary the second and miss the first.

Two dates, two owners

Your policy's renewal is a matter between you and the insurer. It happens on the term the contract sets, it is governed by the terms you agreed, and the insurer is the one who tells you about it. Whether it renews automatically, whether anything is re-asked, and how much notice either side has to give are all in your own documents.

Your residence renewal is a matter between you and the authorities. It happens on the permission's own timetable and the office handling it decides what it wants to see. We do not state here what that is, because no page should: ask the office that will handle yours, in good time.

The two interact in one direction only. A lapse in the policy can create a gap in your record that is awkward at residence renewal. A residence renewal does not, by itself, do anything to your policy.

So the practical rule is simple: keep the policy continuous and keep the documents, then deal with the residence renewal on its own terms when it comes.

Four dates worth writing down

All four come off documents you already hold. None of them requires anybody's interpretation.

  • The policy's end date. The single most useful date in this list.
  • The notice date — the last day you could change anything without it being late. Work it out from the notice period in your terms and put it in the diary rather than the notice period itself, because a date is actionable and a period is a calculation you will have to do again.
  • The payment date or dates, so a failed card does not become a lapsed policy. This is the most common way cover ends without anybody deciding to end it.
  • Your residence permission's expiry. Not because it changes the policy, but because it is the date the office will be working to, and the one you want months rather than weeks of warning about.

Set the first three to remind you a clear month ahead. A month is enough time to change insurer properly if you decide to; a week is not.

What is worth re-checking at each renewal

A renewal is the natural moment to look at whether the policy still fits, because it is the one moment when changing it costs nothing extra.

Has your situation changed? A change of work arrangement, of registration, or of who lives with you can change what you need the policy to do — or whether you need it at all. Do I need private insurance at all? is worth re-reading rather than assumed to be settled.

Is everyone still on it who should be? Policies and households drift apart. A child who has arrived, a partner whose own cover has ended, somebody who has left — each of those is a change to make deliberately rather than discover.

Does it still do what your position needs? Hold it against what a private policy has to cover rather than against last year's version of itself.

Are your contact details right with the insurer? Unglamorous, and it is how renewal notices end up unread at an address you left two years ago.

How cover ends without anybody ending it

Nearly every gap we see was nobody's decision. Four ways it happens:

  • A card expired. The premium stopped going out, the notices went somewhere unread, and the policy went with them.
  • A renewal notice went to an old address or an old mailbox. Same outcome, slower.
  • Somebody cancelled early to avoid paying twice while arranging a replacement, and the replacement took three weeks. Changing insurer is the sequence that prevents this.
  • The policy was treated as application paperwork and allowed to run out once the visa was granted. What approval does and does not change covers that one.

A lapse is worse than it looks for a reason that has nothing to do with paperwork: you cannot buy cover for a period that has already passed. Everything else on this page is recoverable; that is not.

Renewal coming up?

Tell us what your policy says and what has changed in the last year, and we will go through whether it still fits. If the answer is that it does, renewing it as it stands is the right outcome and we will say so.

Common questions

Is my policy renewal the same as my visa renewal?

They are different dates with different owners. The policy renews on the term in your contract, and the insurer tells you about it. Your residence renews on the permission's own timetable, and the office handling it decides what it wants to see. Keeping the policy continuous is what connects the two.

Does my policy renew automatically?

Read your own terms — whether it renews automatically, and what notice either side owes, is a term of your contract rather than a general rule. Then diary the end date and the notice date, because those are the two that are actionable.

What insurance will I need when I renew my residence?

Ask the office that will handle your renewal, in good time. That is not evasion: what is asked for is their decision, it is not something to take from a web page, and a continuous record is what helps in every version of the answer.

My cover lapsed by accident — what now?

You cannot buy cover for a period that has already passed, so a gap in the record stays a gap. Get something in force as soon as you realise, keep the documents from both sides of the gap, and be straightforward about it if you are asked.

Should I shop around at renewal?

Renewal is the cheapest moment to change anything, so yes — re-check whether your situation has moved, whether everyone who should be on the policy is on it, and whether it still does what your position needs. If nothing has changed, renewing as-is is a decision rather than a default.

Applies to: applications made through a Spanish consulate and applications made from within Spain — renewal of the policy works the same way on both · Health-insurance information, not immigration or Social Security legal advice.
